The Kentucky Buck Test, also known as a buck performance test,is done to enable producers to choose the best possible bucks. This test allows them to make their selections based not just on physical traits, but also on their genetic potential. A buck will make up half of a producer’s entire herd, so choosing one with a large potential for growth is imperative. A strong producer will increase the daily gain of kid crops and will also increase daily weaning weights significantly.

Typically, the Kentucky Buck test takes place over several days, often as many as 80 or more. After the test is complete, the bucks are available for sale. Professional goat breeders are invited to attend and to purchase a goat, regardless of where they live. People from all over the United States travel to Kentucky for the event. Goat breeders are also invited to enter their best bucks into the test each year.
